Parliamentary Legal Committee Denies Any Movement Towards Amending General Amnesty Law Currently

The Parliamentary Legal Committee has affirmed that there is no current intention within the Council of Representatives to proceed with amending the General Amnesty Law at this stage. Thair Al-Kaabi, a member of the Legal Committee, stated, "There is no current trend within parliament to amend the General Amnesty Law, and so far, we have not heard of any such direction, neither in parliamentary discussions nor among parliamentarians themselves." The lawmaker added that "the Legal Committee, during its sessions, has not addressed the issue in any form, nor has it been included in the files discussed or deliberated within the committee." Al-Kaabi further explained that "ongoing meetings among MPs have also not touched upon this matter, which confirms the absence of any political or parliamentary movement towards amending the law at present." He pointed out that "when the law was enacted, it covered a very large number of categories, leaving outside its scope only those caught in the act and specific cases clearly defined by the law." Al-Kaabi emphasized "the absence of any official proposals to reconsider it," asserting that "any legislative amendment requires prior consensus and discussions within the Council of Representatives and the specialized committees, which has not occurred thus far regarding the General Amnesty Law."
