Widespread Arab Artistic Solidarity with Fairuz Following Celine Dion's Unfamiliarity Remarks

Lebanese iconic singer Fairuz garnered widespread artistic solidarity from prominent Arab artists, following recent remarks by Canadian global star Celine Dion in Paris streets, where she expressed unfamiliarity with Fairuz or her songs. Dion's remarks sparked broad controversy across social media platforms in Lebanon and the wider Arab world. The incident also reignited discussions about the global reach and impact of Fairuz's work, particularly in France, where talent discovery programs have, for many years, featured "Jarat Al Qamar" (Moon's Neighbor) songs performed by both Arab and foreign talents. During the Murex D'or 2026 awards ceremony in Beirut, several artists, including Bassem Moughnieh, Talal Mardini, Rita Hayek, Carlos Azar, Mohammed Al-Akhras, and Joud Torad, were keen to offer their support to Fairuz. They unanimously described her as a "prominent icon" in the Arab singing scene. Moughnieh stated that Celine Dion's lack of knowledge about his Lebanese compatriot, Fairuz, in no way diminishes her stature, emphasizing that she will remain an icon of Arab singing. Carlos Azar commented: "As long as Ms. Fairuz is our ambassador to the stars, then the stars know her." Syrian artist Talal Mardini believed it was sufficient that everyone in the Arab world knew Fairuz well, considering her "a crown on the head of every Arab." Lebanese artist Rita Hayek, for her part, affirmed that Fairuz is an integral part of Arab musical heritage and an unparalleled legend, stating that everyone from Lebanon to the world takes pride in her, adding: "There is no one who doesn't know her." Jordanian artist Mohammed Al-Akhras pointed out that he does not view Celine Dion's unfamiliarity with Fairuz as a diminishment of her worth whatsoever, suggesting that cultural differences between the Arab and Western worlds could be the actual reason for Dion's lack of knowledge. Conversely, Joud Torad opined that Celine Dion might have been distressed or surprised when the question was posed to her, noting that the limited international reach of Fairuz's songs could fundamentally stem from reasons related to the country's own publicity efforts. Celine Dion had recently generated wide interaction following a spontaneous conversation with a Lebanese journalist in a Parisian street. When unexpectedly asked if she knew the Lebanese artist Fairuz, the Canadian star responded negatively, then asked with evident surprise: "Should I listen to her?"
