Sharp Decline in Ship Transit Via Omani Strait of Hormuz Route

Recent analytical data revealed that 19 ships transited the Strait of Hormuz in both directions on Saturday. Notably, only one vessel explicitly announced using the Omani route, a significant decrease compared to the 13 ships that took this route on Friday. This substantial decline has reduced the number of vessels traversing the Strait along the Omani coast to its lowest recorded levels. This occurred after several ships unexpectedly altered their routes in the region during the weekend. Information indicates that at least eight vessels, which were passing through the Omani route in the Strait, suddenly changed course on Friday and Saturday. Four of these ships headed towards the route extending along the Iranian coast and exited the Strait via it. The vessels that altered their routes included various types such as oil tankers, bulk carriers, and car carriers. No official clarifications have been issued so far regarding the reason for these changes in course. Conversely, Tehran has repeatedly affirmed that ships should only transit the Strait through routes approved by Iran. In a related development, reports on Sunday indicated that Iranian boats diverted six vessels from the Omani passage in the Strait of Hormuz. These latest developments in the Strait of Hormuz reflect the ongoing complexities surrounding the reopening of this vital maritime passage, despite the announced agreement between the United States and Iran in mid-June.
