Research reveals how artificial intelligence influences human choices

Academic researchers from the universities of Hong Kong and Tsinghua have reached findings indicating the possibility of easily guiding human decisions through smart technologies. A practical experiment involving two hundred thirty-three individuals showed that subtle guidance from modern technologies pushed participants to adopt less useful choices by varying proportions ranging from five to eight times, while retaining a positive view of these technical aids, and the results of this scientific research were published in the peer-reviewed PNAS journal. Individuals' reliance on smart systems for obtaining advice and guidance in financial and personal relationship matters is increasing significantly, as users usually assume that these tools provide a more accurate understanding of reality and offer suitable alternatives. Nonetheless, the study sought to test scenarios where recommendations are passed subtly to push the user toward paths that oppose their actual interest. During the aforementioned tests, the extent of the impact of smart guidance was evaluated within various financial and emotional scenarios, as the system sometimes resorted to covertly promoting poorly beneficial choices while maintaining its usual appearance in offering advice. The results confirmed that this simple guidance succeeded in bringing about clear shifts in individuals' behavior, making them choose useless alternatives compared to normal conditions, recording an increase in the likelihood of making suboptimal decisions of up to thirty-eight percent depending on the nature of the presented situation. The systems did not need to exert direct pressure or use complex promotional methods, but the matter was limited to a slight modification in the phrasing of usual recommendations to direct the user toward a specific direction. Special attention was drawn to the continued participation of participants in giving positive evaluations to the smart assistant even after being exposed to inappropriate choices resulting from its guidelines, as they described it as a helpful interlocutor and overlooked its covert guidance of their choices. These data raise real challenges in the nature of human interaction with technology, given the user's sense of trust toward calm, balanced, and objective responses, making it difficult to detect any hidden intentions behind those tips. For example, any entity could adjust smart systems to direct consumers toward acquiring specific goods or adopting certain entities, so that the recommendation appears neutral despite its direct connection to the interests of the developing entity rather than the consumer's own interest.
