President Emphasizes State's Exclusive Right to War and Peace Decisions and the Importance of Weapon Control for Sovereignty
President Nizar Amidi affirmed on Wednesday that the exclusive right to decide on war and peace belongs solely to the state and its constitutional institutions. He emphasized that addressing the issue of weapons and placing them under state control, while subjecting all forms of force to constitutional and legal provisions, is a fundamental pillar in preserving sovereignty, maintaining stability, and reinforcing the state's prestige. In a statement on Sovereignty Day, he highlighted that "Iraq’s sovereignty, the independence of its national decision, the unity of its land, and the integrity of its institutions are non-negotiable constants." He stressed that the will of the Iraqi people and their national interests form the foundation for shaping the country’s present and future, as well as determining its choices and international relations. He added that "sovereignty can only be complete with a strong state, firmly established institutions, and effective law that monopolizes sovereign decisions and exercises constitutional responsibilities over the entire territory." He reaffirmed that the decision on war and peace is an exclusive right of the state and its constitutional bodies. The president called on all political and national forces to assume their responsibilities in protecting the unity of Iraq’s decision-making, prioritizing the state's supreme interests above all else, strengthening national cohesion, and shielding the country from conflicts and divisions. He noted that the conclusion of the international coalition’s mission in Iraq marks a transition to a new phase of international relations based on full sovereignty, balanced partnerships, mutual interests, and non-interference in internal affairs. Iraq looks forward to expanding its political, economic, trade, and cultural relations with countries worldwide. He commemorated the martyrs from the armed forces, police, Popular Mobilization Forces, Peshmerga, and tribal mobilization, along with all those who sacrificed their lives defending Iraq against ISIS. He saluted everyone who contributed to protecting the homeland and preserving its security and unity. He concluded by affirming that "Iraq is free, dignified, united, and fully sovereign."
