Israel Continues Escalating Gaza Strikes Amidst Cairo Talks

The Israeli military has escalated its attacks on the Gaza Strip, resulting in the martyrdom of 10 Palestinians in two airstrikes on Tuesday, including a senior police officer. This escalation comes as mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, in coordination with the U.S. administration, intensify efforts to achieve a breakthrough in ongoing talks in Cairo. These discussions aim to reach an agreement on the second phase of a ceasefire as soon as possible. According to Mahmoud Basal, spokesperson for the Civil Defense in Gaza, Israeli forces targeted a police center in the Jabalia refugee camp in the northern Strip with an airstrike, leading to the death of the center's director and eight other police personnel, along with a female passerby. Basal added that the tenth victim was martyred in another Israeli strike on Tuesday morning, which targeted the Al-Qadisiya camp for displaced persons in the Al-Mawasi area, west of Khan Younis in the southern Strip. Gaza's Ministry of Interior confirmed in a statement the martyrdom of Colonel Mohammad Marwan Salem, director of the Jabalia camp police center, along with several officers and personnel, due to what it described as a "massacre" committed by the occupation forces by bombing a police point west of the camp. In a related context, the Government Media Office in Gaza revealed in a report Israeli violations of the ceasefire agreement since the truce began, recording 3,689 breaches. The report indicated the documentation of at least 1,122 martyrs as a result of these continuous violations. Regarding humanitarian aid, the office stated that only 58,664 trucks entered the Gaza Strip since the start of the truce, out of 165,000 trucks that were expected to enter to date, representing a compliance rate of no more than 35%. Concerning traveler movement, only 8,878 travelers were permitted to cross, out of 24,000 travelers who were supposed to be allowed to travel since the agreement to open the Rafah land crossing. The office urged mediators and guarantors of the ceasefire agreement to compel Israel to implement all provisions of the agreement and halt its ongoing violations. Meanwhile, a delegation from Hamas and other Palestinian factions has been continuing their talks in Cairo for a week, aiming to solidify the fragile truce and move to the second phase of the ceasefire agreement. A source reported optimism about reaching an agreement soon, but this depends on the Israeli government's response to Hamas's observations. The source added that an agreement could be reached immediately if the will exists on the other side, especially since Hamas has shown significant flexibility on contentious issues, such as weapons, personnel, and non-participation in governing Gaza.
