Iraqi Ambassador in Tehran: Ongoing Efforts to Resume Flights, Suspension is Temporary and Won't Affect Deep Ties
Iraqi Ambassador to Tehran, Yasser Al-Hajjaj, affirmed that the suspension of air travel between Iraq and the Islamic Republic of Iran is a temporary and transient circumstance. He stressed this halt will not, in any way, affect the deep historical relations and solid bonds uniting the two neighboring countries and peoples. Al-Hajjaj clarified that the Iraqi government is pursuing intensive efforts and communications with the Iranian side. This initiative stems from its commitment to the interests of both peoples and to facilitating the movement of citizens and travelers, aiming to restore air traffic to normalcy as soon as possible. The ambassador explained that resuming flights is crucial, extending beyond tourism to a wide segment of Iraqis residing and studying in Iran. He noted nearly one hundred thousand Iraqi students in Iranian educational institutions, alongside a large diaspora estimated at hundreds of thousands. Thousands of travelers also move daily between the two countries via various airports and border crossings. Al-Hajjaj stated that continuous smooth air transport is a humanitarian and practical necessity for students, diaspora members, visitors, and travelers. He also highlighted its significant role in enhancing economic, social, and cultural communication between the two peoples. He added that Iraq, driven by its responsibility and concern for its citizens' interests, continues to coordinate with relevant Iranian authorities to address the exceptional circumstances that led to the flight suspension. This aims to ensure their resumption and a return to normal travel. The ambassador concluded by reiterating that Iraqi-Iranian relations are too deep to be affected by an emergency. He emphasized that historical, social, cultural ties, and mutual interests form a solid foundation for cooperation. Baghdad pledged diligent work to overcome this situation and ensure swift return of flight operations and smooth citizen movement.
