German Chancellor Defends Nation's NATO Contributions, Responding to Trump's Criticism
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz affirmed Germany feels no embarrassment regarding its defense contributions within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), in response to former US President Donald Trump's criticism of Berlin's contributions. Merz clarified he would emphasize during the upcoming NATO summit that Germany's and European countries' contributions are the highest within the alliance. Speaking to reporters on Friday, in response to Trump's description of past German efforts as "ridiculous," the German Chancellor stressed his country "should not hesitate to boast about its record in defense spending." Merz also affirmed Germany "will double its defense budget within four years," describing it as "the greatest effort we have ever made to strengthen our defense capabilities. From this perspective, we have no reason to back down or feel embarrassed before any party." These statements come amidst renewed criticisms from the former US President towards NATO and member states' defense expenditures, asserting his country spends the most while Germany spends the least. Since assuming his presidential term, Trump consistently directed criticisms at the alliance, demanding an increase in defense spending and repeatedly threatening withdrawal. He reduced US troops in some European bases. The Trump administration previously announced plans to withdraw approximately 5,000 US soldiers from Germany last May, also canceling plans for a battalion deployment and exploring the cancellation of "Tomahawk" cruise missiles scheduled for deployment there in 2027. Trump also hinted at withholding military aid to NATO members if requested. Trump intensified these criticisms with escalating tensions and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. He demanded allies contribute to opening this vital and strategic shipping lane, but most European countries declined, further fueling his resentment towards them and NATO.
