British PM Stresses Tough Decisions to Safeguard Economy
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced that the upcoming government budget would be challenging, signaling a shift in the government's tone amidst surging inflation and rising borrowing costs. Burnham emphasized that global economic conditions are becoming increasingly difficult, affirming the government's resolve to make tough decisions to ensure the economy remains on track, while carefully avoiding risks to citizens' living standards or the economy as a whole. These statements follow a rise in British inflation to 3.1% in August, up from 2.9% in July, primarily driven by soaring fuel and energy prices. Core inflation stabilized at 2.6%, while services inflation reached 3.4%. In addition to mounting inflationary pressures, the government faces challenges from rising yields on British bonds. Despite these difficulties, Healy affirmed the resilience of the British economy, with previous data having revealed a 0.4% growth in GDP in July, supported by the services, technology, and artificial intelligence sectors.
