Apple Unveils MacBook Pro with Touchscreen and Premium Pricing

Apple has officially entered a new era with MacBook Pro models featuring touchscreen displays, introduced at unprecedented price points in the series' history. The starting price for the new MacBook Pro is $2,899, a high figure given the current economic climate. The top-tier version, with all available upgrades, can cost up to approximately $14,549. The 14-inch model reaches $14,249 at maximum specifications, while the 16-inch model is priced around $14,549. Both devices are powered by Apple's advanced M5 Max processor, featuring an 18-core CPU and a 40-core GPU. These high prices come amid a persistent shortage of memory components and increased demand for hardware necessary to run artificial intelligence applications, driving up manufacturing costs. The company charges significant additional fees for storage and memory upgrades: upgrading to a 4TB SSD costs $1,000, 8TB costs $3,000, and the 16TB option adds $7,000. Users can also upgrade memory to 128GB for an extra $2,000 and add nano-textured glass that reduces reflections for an additional $150. For comparison, the highest-spec previous 16-inch MacBook Pro was priced at $10,149, indicating a $4,400 increase in the new model, reflecting the cost of advanced options. The launch of the touchscreen MacBook Pro marks a strategic shift for Apple after nearly a decade since its initial Touch Bar experiment, which was later discontinued. The company is now ready to embrace touchscreens in its laptops, signaling a notable change in user interaction.
