148 MPs Urge Emergency Parliament Session on Regional Escalation and Salary Issues

The Council of Representatives is moving towards holding an emergency session next week to discuss the general financial situation in the country and ensure salary payments. In this regard, member of the Legal Committee, MP Thair Al-Kaabi, stated that "the situation in the region does not concern Iraq alone, but is witnessing a dangerous escalation," indicating that "a number of parliamentary members submitted an official request to the Speaker's office to convene an emergency session." Al-Kaabi confirmed that "the number of MPs who signed this request reached 148." Al-Kaabi added that "the upcoming session is not limited to discussing recent strikes only, but will also address the issue of salaries and the financial situation in general, as the current stage requires a thorough understanding of the economic conditions facing the country." He emphasized that "Parliament stands by the government and is ready to legislate any law it needs to confront the financial crisis." Separately, MP Amer Nasrallah called for an emergency session of the Council of Representatives with the presence of the Minister of Finance, to discuss the country's financial situation and the measures taken by the ministry to address the crisis, in addition to mechanisms to ensure regular salary disbursements in the coming period. Nasrallah affirmed that "the continued delay in salaries imposes a heavy burden on employees, retirees, and their families, directly impacting their living and economic conditions, as well as its negative effects on market activity and economic stability, which necessitates urgent parliamentary intervention to ascertain the causes of this delay and implement necessary remedies to prevent its recurrence in the future."
