US Fuel Prices Hit Highest Level on Election Day Since 2000

Gasoline and diesel prices in the United States reached record levels on Tuesday, coinciding with election day, despite a decline in prices over the past weeks. Fuel costs continue to strain American household budgets amid the ongoing conflict with Iran. According to an analysis of data from the American Automobile Association (AAA), the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline nationwide hit $4.15, marking the highest price recorded on a US election day since data collection began in 2000. This price surpassed the previous record of $3.80 per gallon, set during the 2022 midterm elections, when inflation reached its highest point in four decades under former President Joe Biden. Meanwhile, the average price for a gallon of diesel, heavily used in transportation, logistics, and industry sectors, rose to $6.29, exceeding the prior election day record of $5.35 set in 2022. The analysis highlights that diesel prices reached a record level for election day even after adjusting for inflation.
