US Finalizes Landmark Deal for Patriot Missile Production Amid Dwindling Stock

The U.S. Army has finalized a $58.62 billion contract with Lockheed Martin for the production of Patriot interceptor missiles. This record-breaking deal, announced by the U.S. Department of Defense, comes amid concerns over dwindling American weapon stockpiles due to ongoing global conflicts. The United States has supplied its allies with substantial quantities of arms, while simultaneously utilizing munitions in its military operations in Iran, raising significant concerns about its main air defense and precision-guided weapon inventories. The Army clarified that this contract transforms a previous one-year, $4.7 billion agreement, signed last April, into a seven-year draft agreement. This covers a multi-year procurement plan for interceptor missiles from fiscal year 2026 through 2032. The deal coincides with increased pressure on U.S. weapon inventories, stemming from conflicts in Ukraine and those related to Iran, following Washington's provision of over $70 billion in military aid to Kyiv and the use of large quantities of missiles during the conflict with Iran. Estimates suggest that rebuilding some of these stockpiles could take over three years, amidst difficulties faced by the White House in approving a record defense budget for 2027.
