Kristersson Announces Resignation as Swedish PM Following Election Defeat

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced his resignation from office on Thursday, following the opposition bloc's victory in the parliamentary elections. This decision comes after the defeat of the center-right bloc, led by Kristersson, in the ballot held on September 13. In an official letter addressed to the Speaker of Parliament, Kristersson requested to be relieved of his duties as Prime Minister, publishing the text of this letter on his X account. Kristersson indicated that the election results might create complex conditions for forming the next government, explaining that the conflicting statements made by parties before the elections "may constitute obstacles to candidates for prime minister and potential coalitions." Kristersson emphasized the necessity of conducting comprehensive negotiations with all parties to create the necessary conditions for forming a stable and effective government in the country. He added that the Speaker's current task is to lead the next steps towards building a new government. Regarding the election results, the opposition center-left bloc secured 49.5% of the total votes, while the ruling right bloc, led by Kristersson, obtained 48.8% of the votes. The left bloc, which includes the Swedish Social Democratic Party led by former Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson, the Left Party, the Centre Party, and the Green Party, won 176 seats in Parliament. The remaining 173 seats went to the right bloc, composed of the Moderate Party led by Kristersson, the Christian Democrats, the Liberals, and the Sweden Democrats.
