UK Cinemas Ban Smart Glasses Over Privacy and Piracy Fears

British cinema operators are implementing policies to ban or restrict camera-equipped smart glasses, including Meta's AI-powered devices. This follows concerns over individual privacy and potential film piracy, just days after English and Welsh courts prohibited their use in judicial chambers. Courts in England and Wales this month banned Meta smart glasses, citing restrictions on capturing photos and videos within courtrooms, amidst increased scrutiny of their recording capabilities. The British Cinema Association explained that cinema policies vary by venue. Operators may enforce a ban, restrictions, or both, instead of a uniform sector-wide rule. The association acknowledged smart glasses could offer benefits for those with specific accessibility needs. The Association affirmed its commitment to working with members to ensure their approach remains suitable. This follows an August announcement by a German rights group, which filed a criminal lawsuit against Meta and other parties involved in selling Meta devices, citing privacy protection laws.
