Prominent Mathematicians Warn of AI Threat to Their Field
Twenty-five Fields Medal recipients, the highest honor in mathematics, issued a joint warning: the race by AI companies to solve renowned mathematical problems threatens permanent damage to the field. This alert, signed by prominent scientists, followed OpenAI's announcement of solving a "Millennium Prize Problem" that had eluded mathematicians for generations. The letter asserted that AI companies' goals and the mathematics community's objectives are "largely incompatible," posing a "general threat to intellectual work." The 25 signatories span five decades of Fields Medal history, an award considered among the world's most prestigious in mathematics, often termed the "Nobel of Mathematics." Pierre Deligne won in 1978, with Yu Ding receiving it this year. Scientists clarified the ultimate purpose of problems is skill development for students, more vital than mere solutions. They added, "solving problems is merely a tool and a means to achieve theoretical understanding," emphasizing these processes "always take time and are based on human interaction." The letter questioned: "How do we ensure that we do not overlook, as AI changes work methods, what this work was supposed to achieve?" They urged urgent action, both within the mathematical community and from tech developers and broader society. OpenAI reported Tuesday that an unreleased model successfully solved the "Navier-Stokes problem," one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems, after an 88-hour process involving thousands of parallel AI agents.
