Apple Unveils iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max: A20 Pro Chip and Strongest Battery Yet

Apple Inc. unveiled its latest series of smartphones, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, during its "Surprise and Shine" conference held on Wednesday. The new phones feature the advanced A20 chip and the most powerful battery Apple has ever designed. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models are available in distinctive colors, including Deep Black, Elegant Silver, in addition to two new shades: Glacier Blue and Maroon, described as a "new color characterized by sophistication and distinction." The Siri voice assistant in these phones comes with enhanced capabilities, now able to perform actions within various applications, including third-party apps. Siri also recognizes the user's personal context across applications such as Mail and Messages, offering a rich conversational experience either by voice or typing directly on the device, or through the entirely new Siri app appearing on the home screen. Siri has also been integrated directly into the iPhone's camera app, allowing users to ask questions and perform multiple tasks, such as adding several events to their calendar at once. The intelligent assistant relies on AI-powered Siri voices, utilizing Apple's most advanced models to operate directly on the device, enabling the generation of expressive voices that users can choose from and customize speech speed and expression level. The new smart Siri is a standalone, AI-powered application and will support various languages other than English starting October 2026. The new A20 Pro chip is described as "an exceptional chip that sets a new standard for mobile computing," built on an entirely new architecture using 2-nanometer technology. The chip features a hexa-core central processing unit (CPU), divided into two ultra-performance cores with up to a 20% speed increase, and four new efficiency cores. The ultra-performance cores are categorized as having "desktop-level performance" and being "the fastest of their kind in any smartphone." As for the new graphics processing unit (GPU) in the iPhone 18 Pro, it features a 7-core design, delivering up to 40% faster graphics performance, along with increased bandwidth and new neural accelerators that double the speed of 8FP calculations. These enhancements facilitate running third-party large language models (LLMs) directly on the device. The Neural Engine has continued its evolution with the addition of a second unit, bringing the total to 32 cores. The "A20 Pro" chip is considered the ideal choice for running advanced models locally on the device and boasts the widest memory interface ever offered in an iPhone. To ensure optimal thermal performance, the iPhone 18 Pro incorporates a next-generation vapor chamber cooling system. The surface area of this chamber is three times that of the chamber found in the iPhone 17 Pro model, and deionized water is continuously circulated within the system to achieve significant improvements in thermal performance. The iPhone 18 Pro achieves another significant leap in battery life thanks to the efficiency of the A20 Pro chip, offering the same battery life as the larger Pro Max model. The iPhone 18 Pro Max has seen the largest battery life increase in iPhone history. Video playback time for the iPhone 18 Pro model is approximately 36 hours, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max reaches up to 45 hours. In typical usage scenarios, battery life extends to 24 hours per charge for the 18 Pro model and up to 30 hours per charge for the Pro Max model. Wired charging has also become notably faster; the phone can be charged to 50% in approximately 15 minutes, and just 5 minutes of wired charging provides enough power for 6 hours of video playback. Finally, the iPhone 18 Pro features a new 48-megapixel "Fusion" main camera, equipped with a variable aperture that allows for unprecedented creative control, and is classified as the most advanced camera ever designed by the company.
