President Trump Presents Decisive Options for Tehran at UN: Deal or Dire Confrontation

President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday, in his address to the United Nations General Assembly, the return of the United States "stronger than ever," emphasizing the strength of its economy, which garners global admiration, and its military, the most powerful on Earth. Trump clarified that American technology is unparalleled, and his country leads in almost all fields, with its energy sector contributing to global supply. He continued, stating: "America is rising, our nation is growing, our power is expanding, our country is in a better position than ever before, and our future is very bright." Trump indicated that he faces a critical decision between concluding an agreement that allows Iran to rebuild itself, or "swiftly eliminating the Islamic Republic," suggesting that an agreement could be reached after the US midterm elections. He mentioned that Iran had violated the ceasefire agreed upon in the "memorandum of understanding" by carrying out what he described as "terrorist acts" targeting civilian ships belonging to other nations. He thanked the UN Security Council for adopting a resolution condemning Iranian attacks on commercial vessels, noting that the resolution received the highest number of co-sponsoring states compared to any previous Council resolution, and urged continued pressure on Tehran. He also pointed out that the US Navy had escorted over a billion barrels of oil through the Strait of Hormuz, and oil flows had reached their highest levels since the start of the war, with an escort rate of between 22 and 37 vessels daily. Trump expressed his belief that an agreement with Iran could be concluded after the midterm elections, attributing this to Tehran's anticipation of the election results. The US President called on all nations to join in imposing "complete economic isolation" on Iran, aiming to compel it to cease its attacks on commercial ships, abandon its nuclear ambitions, and end its support for terrorism. He stated that the "Epic Fury" operation against Iran resulted in the sinking of all 159 Iranian naval vessels, as well as the destruction of Tehran's air and defensive capabilities. He clarified that the Iranian air force, radar systems, and anti-aircraft equipment "no longer exist," while missile and drone manufacturing capabilities were almost completely destroyed. He highlighted the collapse of the Iranian economy, with inflation exceeding 300%, considering that his administration had provided Tehran with "every opportunity" to reach an agreement before resorting to military action to ensure it does not obtain nuclear cover for widespread attacks. Trump accused Iran of funding the perpetrators of the October 7 attack on Israel, which resulted in the deaths of 1200 people, including dozens of Americans. He also leveled accusations against Iranian authorities for killing over 72,000 of its citizens this year, including 10,000 during recent protests. He declared that Iran "is no longer the bully of the Middle East," reiterating his pledge not to allow Tehran to possess nuclear weapons. Trump, in his speech, described Iran as "the primary sponsor of terrorism," accusing the Iranian regime of "spreading death and chaos" in the Middle East and beyond. He noted that after assuming office last year, he opened negotiations with Iran, offering comprehensive economic cooperation in exchange for ending its nuclear program and support for terrorism, but it rejected this offer. Trump stated that the US military "destroyed" Iran's nuclear program during "Operation Midnight Hammer" (June 2025 war), indicating that he had again called on Tehran to conclude an agreement, but it refused. He accused Iran of continuing to build a massive stockpile of missiles and drones that threaten US military personnel and regional countries, in addition to developing a missile capable of reaching Europe, claiming that Tehran sought to possess a nuclear bomb under the protection of an arsenal of conventional ballistic missiles. In another part of his speech, US President Donald Trump urged countries worldwide to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC), affirming that his country does not recognize its jurisdiction. He stressed that the United States "will not allow its military personnel to be investigated or subjected" to what he described as "sham trials" before an "anti-American court" that has no jurisdiction over it. Trump criticized UN human rights officials for their criticism of his country's policies regarding child gender transition procedures and immigration law enforcement, accusing the Human Rights Council of "hypocrisy" and "not paying enough attention to the persecution of Christians worldwide." President Donald Trump also announced on Tuesday that approximately 30 countries had joined the "Peace Council" he chairs, expressing his gratitude to the Security Council for unanimously approving the 20-point Gaza peace plan and officially establishing the Council. He noted that several countries had contributed billions of dollars to fund relief and reconstruction efforts in Gaza. He stated that these funds would be directed straight to the needy areas and entities, pointing to the readiness of other countries to provide additional contributions to support humanitarian needs. Trump extended his thanks to the countries that pledged to provide troops, police elements, and training programs to help stabilize Gaza. Regarding security, the US President affirmed that the United States now enjoys "permanent security control" over Greenland. He announced: "We will immediately begin a large-scale process of reinforcing our military presence in appropriate locations, and we will build two very large military bases."
