President Affirms Karbala as Beacon of Resistance, Freedom During Visit
President Nazar Aamedi affirmed on Wednesday that the holy city of Karbala has always been a beacon of resistance against injustice and tyranny, defending the values of freedom and dignity. He made these remarks during his visit to Karbala Governorate, meeting with Governor Nassif Jassim Al-Khattabi, Provincial Council Chairman Qasim Al-Yassari, members, and administrative unit heads. Discussions during the meeting covered the governorate's situation, service and developmental needs, and plans to enhance infrastructure. This is crucial given Karbala's growing religious and tourist activity. Aamedi clarified Karbala's historical role as both a center for religious and spiritual enlightenment and a site of notable national stances. He highlighted the uprisings of 1977 and 1991 as proof of its people's rejection of autocracy and injustice. He also noted Karbala as the origin of the Sufficient Jihad fatwa, which mobilized Iraqis against ISIS and thwarted its plots, thus reaffirming the city's national role in defending Iraq's unity and sovereignty. The President emphasized the necessity of giving Karbala Governorate the attention commensurate with its immense religious and historical stature. The city holds a deeply rooted symbolism for Iraqis and Muslims, housing the shrines of Imam Hussein bin Ali and his brother Abu al-Fadl al-Abbas (peace be upon them), alongside other holy sites attracting millions of annual visitors. Aamedi indicated the special attention Karbala receives, stressing the need to work on improving its service and urban realities in a manner befitting its people and visitors. This effort aims to enhance its capacity to welcome millions of pilgrims and provide them with the best services. He confirmed the Presidency's support for Karbala's local government efforts and its assistance in implementing development and prosperity plans. He reiterated the fundamental priority of serving citizens, meeting their needs, and improving services, emphasizing listening to residents' demands and addressing them within legal and available means. For their part, the Governor of Karbala, the Chairman and members of the Provincial Council, and the heads of administrative units expressed their appreciation for the President's visit. They also reviewed the main needs and challenges facing Karbala Governorate, along with proposed projects for advancing its service and developmental status.
