Pezeshkian: Iran-Iraq Security Intertwined, Agreements Must Turn Into Practical Achievements
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian emphasized the necessity of formulating a comprehensive strategic cooperation plan with Iraq. He stressed that developing relations between Tehran and Baghdad relies on the swift implementation of agreements, expanding economic and infrastructure collaboration, and enhancing security. He affirmed the interconnected security of the two countries, noting a shared will to transform agreements into practical achievements. In a presidential statement, Pezeshkian expressed satisfaction at hosting the Iraqi Prime Minister and his accompanying delegation, affirming both nations' resolve to elevate their comprehensive relations. He stated that Iran seeks to raise ties to the highest possible level across political, economic, commercial, scientific, agricultural, industrial, security, and infrastructure sectors, based on their shared historical, cultural, and religious bonds. Pezeshkian described the Arbaeen ceremonies as a unique manifestation of these bonds, praising the generosity of the Iraqi people and government towards millions of Iranian pilgrims, which created "exceptional scenes of empathy, brotherhood, and solidarity." He also highlighted the massive public attendance at Sayyed Khamenei's funeral, viewing it as evidence of deep bonds between the two peoples that "transcend political frameworks." The Iranian President underscored the activation of joint mechanisms, calling for regular committee meetings and accelerated implementation of bilateral agreements and memoranda of understanding. He urged that all agreements be put into effect as quickly as possible, with continuous follow-up from relevant authorities, and called on concerned ministers to offer practical solutions to expedite cooperation. Pezeshkian reiterated the importance of preparing a comprehensive strategic cooperation plan, considering it a roadmap for developing long-term relations. Citing Europe's experience in facilitating travel and trade, he proposed that regional countries create conditions to ease the movement of citizens, economic actors, academics, and tourists, removing obstacles to regional cooperation, based on commonalities. He clarified that developing land and rail transport networks is a priority for Iran, noting his country's initiation of communication infrastructure development with neighboring states. Tehran expressed interest in connecting Iraq to these networks to boost cooperation in transit, investment, common markets, and port development. Pezeshkian affirmed that security is among the most critical areas of cooperation between Tehran and Baghdad, emphasizing the interconnected security of the two nations. He warned that "any security disruption in one country will directly affect the other, making enhanced security cooperation a strategic necessity." He also stressed the full implementation of the security agreement, particularly regarding clearing border areas of hostile groups, affirming Iran's preference for addressing issues through cooperation and peaceful solutions. Concluding his remarks, Pezeshkian expressed hope for tangible results from the visit. He stated, "We look forward to the rapid implementation of the concluded agreements, as the will of both countries aims to transform them from documents and memoranda of understanding into practical achievements. The visit of the Iraqi Prime Minister can mark the beginning of a new chapter in strategic relations between Tehran and Baghdad."
