Iraqi PM Stresses State Protection and Arms Monopoly by Institutions

Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi stressed the paramount importance of safeguarding the Iraqi state's existence and combating the menace of corruption threatening its institutions, affirming the necessity of advancing the restriction of arms to state control. These remarks were made during his reception in Baghdad of tribal elders whose names and contributions are historically linked to the enduring 1920 Revolution, which Iraqis commemorate on its 106th anniversary. During the meeting, Al-Zaidi underscored the significance of recalling these pivotal national events, crowned by the 1920 Revolution, and its fundamental role in establishing the modern Iraqi state. He lauded the alignment of Iraqi national forces behind the Supreme Religious Authority's fatwa at that time, which served the interests of Iraqis and bolstered national sovereignty. The Prime Minister also highlighted the crucial role of monopolizing weapons by the state to empower the armed forces in fulfilling their honorable duties. He further acknowledged the Iraqi tribes' role in upholding the law, extending its authority, and supporting government programs for services, social welfare, and economic reform. Al-Zaidi noted that this year's commemoration of the 1920 Revolution coincides with the holy days of Muharram, thereby reinforcing its resonance and stature in the Iraqi popular consciousness as a pivotal juncture in Iraq's journey towards independence and the consolidation of its national will. Attendees, in turn, commended the Iraqi government's endeavors to protect national resources, enforce anti-corruption laws, and strengthen the state's standing and sovereignty.
