Iraqi Official Confirms PM's Upcoming Visits to Iran, Turkey; Stresses State's Monopoly on Arms

The official spokesperson for the Iraqi government, Haider Al-Aboudi, confirmed on Monday that Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi is set to visit the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Turkey soon. Al-Aboudi emphasized Iraq's significant interest in its potential role in supporting dialogue and de-escalating regional tensions, also stressing that restricting arms to the state is an independent national decision. Al-Aboudi explained, in statements to the official news agency, that these visits fall within the government's program to solidify and develop Iraq's relations with neighboring countries and regional and international partners. He added that the visits follow the positive outcomes of Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi's recent official trip to the United States of America. He clarified that the two visits are rooted in neighborhood considerations and common interests. Discussions will encompass a range of bilateral files and current regional issues, focusing on developments in the region and efforts to reduce tension and strengthen security and stability. Al-Aboudi reiterated Iraq's commitment to its regional role, based on its balanced relations with various regional and international parties. He highlighted the trust Iraq enjoys and its capacity to effectively contribute to dialogue and easing tensions, thereby serving overall regional security and stability. Regarding the issue of restricting arms to the state, the spokesperson clarified that this is a purely sovereign Iraqi affair. He underscored that the Iraqi government has repeatedly affirmed this file's management adheres to constitutional provisions and applicable laws, based on an independent national decision. He added that this measure is part of the government's program to consolidate state sovereignty and reinforce the rule of law, representing a steadfast governmental commitment implemented through specialized Iraqi institutions.
