Head of Integrity Commission: Public Funds Are a Red Line, Law Will Prosecute All Infringers Regardless of Rank

Mohammed Ali Al-Lami, Head of the Federal Integrity Commission, affirmed on Monday that the Iraqi government prioritizes combating corruption within its agenda, supported by legislative and judicial authorities. Al-Lami emphasized the commission's firm steps to pursue those involved in corruption and recover embezzled funds. This came during Al-Lami's meeting at the commission's headquarters with Finnish Ambassador Antti Potkonen, where he clarified that effective international partnership is essential for combating corruption. He expressed a desire to expand global cooperation, unify efforts against this menace, and enhance partnerships to provide legal assistance, facilitating the recovery of funds from corruption crimes. Al-Lami highlighted that anti-corruption efforts are crucial for fostering a secure and attractive investment environment. He underscored the commission's commitment to protecting investors and foreign companies from extortion, thereby boosting confidence in Iraq's investment climate and supporting reconstruction, construction, and investment projects, which paves the way for sustainable development. He reiterated that the commission operates under the law, aiming to safeguard public funds rather than target positions, irrespective of the transgressor's status. The two sides explored areas of joint cooperation, focusing on mechanisms for preventing, combating, and deterring corruption. Discussions included the potential for a memorandum of understanding between the Integrity Commission and its Finnish counterpart to exchange expertise, experiences, and implement advanced training programs. This aims to enhance staff capabilities in corruption prevention and enforcement, while reinforcing integrity values. The Finnish Ambassador, for his part, commended Iraq's anti-corruption endeavors, stating he observed genuine and serious Iraqi resolve on this issue. He voiced hope for Iraq to achieve an advanced standing in corruption prevention and combating, expressing his country's readiness to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Iraqi commission.
