Head of Border Authority Announces Firm Measures Against Oil Smugglers to Syria

Lieutenant General Omar Al-Waeli, Head of the Border Ports Authority, announced decisive legal measures against those involved in an oil smuggling operation via a tanker heading to Syria. This followed Al-Waeli's field evaluation at the Al-Waleed border crossing yesterday evening, Thursday. The assessment comes after a security operation by the Syrian General Authority for Ports and Customs thwarted a smuggling attempt inside an oil tanker destined for Baniyas. Upon arrival at the crossing, a comprehensive review of all security and technical procedures was initiated, along with precise identification of responsibilities, to prepare for necessary legal actions against anyone proven negligent or involved. Al-Waeli stressed that "border crossings are the first line of defense for Iraq's security and stability," emphasizing "the need to enhance security vigilance and both intelligence and technical efforts." He called for "no leniency with any smuggling attempt or threat to the country's security," clarifying the port's opening aims for economic openness with neighbors, strengthening relations and benefiting both nations. Al-Waeli also indicated the Border Ports Authority continues implementing directives from the Commander-in-Chief, coordinating with relevant security agencies to ensure tight control over ports and prevent any breaches threatening national and regional security. He highlighted "the necessity of coordination and integration with the Syrian side at the crossings through liaison officers to cooperate in thwarting smuggling operations by Iraqi or Syrian drivers." Al-Waeli stressed handing over culprits for investigation instead of releasing them without coordination, especially as the crossing witnesses approximately 2000 tankers exiting daily.
