Germany Seriously Considers Reinstating Conscription to Address Military Volunteer Shortage

Germany is considering reintroducing compulsory military service for its youth, facing a significant volunteer shortage in the armed forces, stated Thomas Riefekamp, head of the German Parliament's (Bundestag) Defense Committee. Riefekamp told Agence France-Presse that German authorities must decide on this by July 31, 2027. He stressed the necessity of a thorough debate on whether ambitious goals to expand active and reserve forces can be met through volunteering alone. Riefekamp voiced strong skepticism, warning that if volunteer efforts fail, conscription's reinstatement would be inevitable. Adding to concerns, Lieutenant General Christian Freuding, Commander of the German Ground Forces, recently acknowledged a volunteer shortfall for the tank brigade planned for Lithuania. He suggested the Defense Ministry might partially forgo the volunteer principle for this unit. Germany's current military service law permits reintroducing conscription, suspended in 2011, under conditions like volunteer scarcity or worsening security. If implemented, Parliament can mandate "need-based conscription," boosting army strength to the required level via "random selection" or lottery.
