British warnings of severe winter energy crisis ahead
Energy suppliers in the United Kingdom have issued strong warnings that families and households are bracing for a winter energy crisis matching the severity of 2022, amid escalating calls for immediate action to relieve citizens burdened by heavy financial pressures from inflation and surging living costs. In this context, Energy UK, the body representing the energy supply sector, appealed urgently to Prime Minister Andy Burnham to intervene and support the poorest segments, while keeping additional charges excluded from consumption bills. Press reports, based on the authority's estimates, indicated that household bills could rise to levels comparable to those recorded years ago, a period that witnessed severe gas supply disruptions due to international crises and forced the government to implement price protection schemes. As a result of these expectations, political pressures on the prime minister are mounting to enact new preventive measures that ease the burden on citizens, especially since Burnham had previously committed to providing financial breathing room for society by cutting value-added tax on energy consumption. For her part, Dara Panth, chief executive of the organization, stressed the impossibility of waiting for the situation to worsen to the peak of the crisis before acting, emphasizing the need to learn from past lessons and avoid late emergency interventions that often lack precision in directing support to those who deserve it and double the overall costs for everyone. Data showed that recent consumption rationalization practiced by households means current bill values completely equal previous spending levels that prompted successive governments to impose price caps to protect consumers. Despite these previous measures, past government policies faced criticism regarding the lack of selectivity in targeting support and including all groups, which burdened the treasury with massive financial burdens. These current developments coincide with ongoing fundamental disruptions in global gas supplies, specifically those resulting from conflicts in the Middle East, which led to a decline in European continent stocks as the cold months approached. Experts confirmed that inventory replenishment operations will take a long time, keeping consumption bills soaring at high levels until next spring. The government had previously begun implementing the decision to abolish value-added tax on electricity bills with the aim of providing limited and temporary support to families lasting until 2027.
