Aoun Affirms Continuity of Christian Presence in Lebanon

Lebanese President Michel Aoun affirmed Lebanon's commitment to maintaining UNIFIL forces in the south or replacing them with European troops that would serve as a core for forces from friendly countries aiming to assist Lebanon in securing the southern region. During a meeting with five French deputies from the Study Group on Eastern Christians, Aoun emphasized that safe and sustainable solutions are achieved through diplomatic negotiations rather than war, noting that wars do not yield practical results but cause destruction, displacement, and casualties, whereas negotiations are the only way to ensure security for nations and peoples. He confirmed that the state is vigilant in protecting the residents of southern border villages who remain steadfast in their homes and properties. It cooperates with humanitarian organizations, UNIFIL, and the Lebanese army to provide all necessary health, educational, and food support until the Israeli occupation ends. Regarding the Christian presence, Aoun stated that there is no threat to Christians in Lebanon, pointing out that what occurred in some neighboring countries cannot be repeated here, as Christians together with their Muslim brothers form a unique model. He highlighted that Lebanon is a message of freedom and pluralism in the region and the world, and cannot survive without its Christian and Muslim wings. Losing the Christian wing would lead to extremism spreading potentially to Europe, while losing the Muslim wing would undermine moderation. Aoun added that Islamic-Christian coexistence in Lebanon is not merely a political formula imposed by circumstances but a national, civilizational choice and a human experience proving that diversity is a source of strength and that differences enrich unity. He stressed that unity between Christians and Muslims is essential to protect Lebanon, ensure its stability, and act as a safeguard against discord.
