Sweden moves to reopen its embassy in Baghdad

The Kingdom of Sweden has announced its government’s intention to move toward reopening its embassy in Baghdad, during extensive diplomatic and security discussions focused on advancing bilateral relations and broadening mutual coordination. This development came as Iraq’s Prime Minister’s National Security Advisor, Qasim al-Araji, received on Sunday the Chargé d'Affaires of the Swedish Embassy in Iraq, Jörgen Lindström. Both sides reviewed existing bilateral ties between the two friendly nations and explored mechanisms to develop them and enhance constructive cooperation. The meeting addressed ongoing cooperation between the Iraqi and Swedish Ministries of Interior, as well as advancing coordination within the judicial sector. They also discussed linking specialized agencies and centers across both countries to foster the exchange of security expertise, share information, and support shared partnerships. Al-Araji emphasized Baghdad’s firm commitment to cultivating balanced ties with countries across the globe, including Sweden. He noted the international respect and appreciation enjoyed by Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi, which reflects a clear willingness to strengthen foreign partnerships with Iraq. For his part, the Swedish Chargé d'Affaires extended congratulations on Iraqi National Day, reaffirming Sweden’s keenness to strengthen ties with Iraq and highlighting Stockholm’s move to reopen its embassy in Baghdad.
