Sudan tops global debt ranking list
Economic. The International Monetary Fund has issued repeated warnings that global debt is approaching its highest levels since World War II, leaving governments with a limited margin to respond to economic shocks. The Fund's data for 2026 showed that Sudan topped the list of the most indebted countries in the world relative to gross domestic product, with the index recording 334.4, a level far exceeding Japan and Singapore. Below is the list of the most indebted countries in terms of the debt-to-GDP ratio, based on International Monetary Fund data for 2026. Venezuela and Lebanon were not included in the ranking because the International Monetary Fund data for 2026 do not include updated and reliable figures for the debt-to-GDP ratio for these two countries. Earlier this month, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva warned that total global public debt is approaching record levels not seen since World War II, and will soon exceed 100 of the global economy.
