Russian Foreign Ministry Warns Citizens of Arrest Risk in Thailand at US Request

The Russian Foreign Ministry has urged its citizens to exercise extreme caution when traveling to Thailand, citing the risk of detention or arrest at the request of the United States. In a statement, the ministry reiterated the need for Russians to be highly vigilant when visiting Thailand for leisure or work, due to the increased likelihood of apprehension or arrest via cooperation with U.S. security and intelligence agencies. It clarified that Thailand, a friendly country popular with Russian tourists, remains a destination where Washington pursues Russian citizens. The ministry accused the United States of acting aggressively, disregarding Thai sovereignty, and conducting "special operations" to detain Russian nationals for various reasons. It noted that many detainees face threats, intimidation, and psychological pressure from U.S. intelligence agencies to force confessions. In light of this, the Russian Foreign Ministry strongly advised citizens who suspect U.S. criminal prosecution to avoid traveling to Thailand or transiting through its airports, due to the existing bilateral extradition treaty with the U.S. It also recommended travelers retain contact information for Russian diplomatic and consular missions abroad. It affirmed that officials will continue providing assistance to protect the rights of their citizens.
