Paris Urges Sanctions on Iran Over Non-Compliance with Nuclear Facility Monitoring

France has called for sanctions to be imposed on Iran should it continue to refuse monitoring of its nuclear facilities. Paris's Ambassador to the United Nations, Jérôme Bonnafont, emphasized the importance of renewing the mandate for the expert team overseeing Iran's nuclear activities, stressing the necessity of "punishing" Tehran if it fails to comply with international monitoring requirements. Media reports indicated on Thursday that Bonnafont, whose nation currently holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council, stated that the Council must vote on renewing the aforementioned team's mandate. He pointed out that this issue was brought up again in September 2025, when sanctions were reimposed on the Islamic Republic due to its non-compliance with its commitments under its nuclear program. The French Ambassador further clarified that the Security Council will discuss Iran's non-compliance with its nuclear pledges this month, with the core of the discussions focusing on this issue and its consequences. Bonnafont added that these discussions are not taking place in isolation but within a multifaceted context, prominently including the current situation in the Gulf region, specifically the Strait of Hormuz, and the freedom of navigation within it.
