Kurdistan Region Secures Federal Oil Ministry Approval for LNG Supply to Address Shortage

The Kurdistan Region announced on Thursday that it has obtained approval from the Federal Ministry of Oil to be supplied with liquefied natural gas (LNG), aimed at compensating for the shortage following the suspension of operations at the Kormor field. A joint statement from the federal Ministry of Electricity and the Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Natural Resources clarified that the decision by the Emirati company "Dana Gas" to halt production operations at the "Kormor" field due to security threats resulted in the cessation of natural gas flow to power generation plants. This cessation led to a decrease of 2500 megawatts in electricity production. The statement further added that a joint task force has been formed by both ministries to monitor the on-ground situation and to reorganize electricity production, transmission, and fair distribution across all governorates and local administrations. The statement affirmed that the Minister of Natural Resources successfully secured the Federal Ministry of Oil’s approval to ensure LNG supplies for the regional government to cover the deficit. Both ministries reassured citizens in the region that there would be no crisis in gas supplies, emphasizing that intensive efforts are underway to resume production operations at the "Kormor" field and restore it to service as soon as possible.
