Karbala Date Production Surges Past 220,000 Tons with State Backing
The holy governorate of Karbala recorded a significant rise in its date production, exceeding 220,000 tons this year, an increase of approximately 40,000 tons over last year. This achievement stems from a new strategy implemented by the local government to develop the agricultural sector. Hashim Al-Zuhairi, Director of Karbala Agriculture, stated that "the directorate adheres to a strategy outlined by the Karbala Governor, which has proven highly successful. It prioritizes agricultural investment in both plant and animal aspects, with particular focus on palm trees, of which the governorate boasts over three million and is historically famed for." Al-Zuhairi attributed "this growth to ongoing government support, a notable decline in insect infestations—especially the Dubas insect—coupled with intensive preventive campaigns against pests and diseases, and the expansion of cultivated palm areas via new projects." Meanwhile, Nizar Abdul Ridha, Director of the Planning and Follow-up Department, highlighted that "Karbala dates are recognized as distinguished varieties in Iraq, thanks to fertile land and abundant water resources." He confirmed "the potential for sustained productivity increases, aligning with the Ministry of Agriculture's current policy to support local produce, ban imports, boost sector investment, and encourage extensive cultivation of key palm varieties."
