Iran Warns Seoul of "Severe" Repercussions for Hormuz Military Involvement

Tehran warned Monday, via Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei, that any South Korean military involvement in Strait of Hormuz operations would be considered support for "US aggression," asserting severe consequences for such a step. Baghaei stated in an "X" post that Iran-South Korea relations span over 64 years, developing continuously on mutual respect. He stressed Iran places great importance on its friendly ties with the Republic of Korea. This warning comes after earlier South Korean reports, citing government and military sources, indicated Seoul is preparing to deploy military assets to support freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, aiming for deployment by year-end. Reuters reported that these accounts pointed to the South Korean government working on parliamentary approval procedures for the move, including submitting the request this month, following cabinet review. Options under consideration include dispatching a maritime patrol aircraft, a logistical support vessel, or a mine detection and clearance unit. Discussions are also underway regarding the size and nature of the potential contribution with countries like the United States, Britain, and France.
