Greece Enacts Law Banning Social Media Use for Under 15s
The Greek parliament approved today a law prohibiting the use of social media for individuals under 15 years old, set to take effect on January 1. The law passed with a parliamentary majority despite opposition from some parties, following discussions from Thursday through today. One Greek party abstained from voting, proposing an alternative that bans use for those under 13 with parental controls for ages 13 to 14, while left-wing and nationalist parties voted against the bill. The legislation requires social media platforms to verify users' ages and imposes penalties on companies that fail to comply. This move reflects a growing global trend to regulate children's access to these platforms, with Australia being the first country to ban use for those under 16.
