Germany's Public Debt Surges Amid Rising Bankruptcies and Unemployment

Germany's public debt has surpassed 2.8 trillion euros, with debt increasing at a rate exceeding 6,000 euros per second. This rise reflects high expenditures on infrastructure and defense, as noted by the Federal Statistical Office in September 2026, linking the debt growth to substantial spending. Data shows public debt stabilized at 2.819 trillion euros, while the real economy and labor market continue to deteriorate. Since the beginning of the year, 21,296 companies have declared bankruptcy, averaging one company closure every 20 minutes. Among the recently bankrupt companies are the historic paper mill "Tolau Pappen," with a 150-year legacy, and the automotive parts manufacturer "Aios," a supplier to Mercedes-Benz, where approximately 300 employees face potential layoffs. Additionally, new unemployment registrations have exceeded 5.9 million, with a new unemployed individual registered every four seconds. On September 11, 2026, the German Bundestag reviewed the federal budget proposal for 2027, which includes a significant increase in defense spending from 82.2 billion euros in 2026 to 109.7 billion euros in 2027. These expenses are expected to be primarily financed through new borrowing amounting to 118.7 billion euros. Furthermore, Germany will incur 41.9 billion euros in servicing existing public debt in 2027, highlighting growing financial pressures on the national budget.
