Germany's Economy Hit Hard by Unprecedented Heat and Water Scarcity

German Environment Minister Carsten Schneider announced that unprecedented severe heatwaves and water scarcity are causing significant damage to the German economy, necessitating comprehensive long-term urban redesign. The Minister explained, in statements to the "Handelsblatt" newspaper, that "the heatwave is inflicting immense losses on our economy," emphasizing the need for extensive restructuring of German cities that could take up to 25 years. Schneider added that ongoing measures to combat these climatic phenomena include increasing the number of trees, expanding green spaces and shaded areas, and reducing asphalted surfaces. These steps aim to enhance cities' capacity to retain and store larger quantities of water, asserting that it is a long-term process extending over a period of 20 to 25 years. The Minister pointed out that recurrent droughts and declining groundwater levels have become a troubling issue for local industries in Germany. Schneider affirmed that water had been abundantly available in Germany for long periods without significant concern, but the situation is now changing radically. Droughts, receding groundwater levels, and shrinking lake waters have gained crucial economic importance, especially since a large sector of companies and factories directly depend on water availability. He noted that these challenges particularly affect large companies with high water consumption. Schneider warned that declining groundwater levels would "definitely" hinder the opening of new industrial facilities in Germany in the future. He clarified that if local communities begin to fear a shortage of water necessary for personal use, this will inevitably lead to an escalation of social opposition to major industrial projects in those areas. This announcement followed the German Meteorological Service (DWD) recording a temperature peak of 41.5 degrees Celsius in the town of Möckern-Drewitz, Saxony-Anhalt, on Saturday. Meteorologists reported that 46 weather stations across the country simultaneously exceeded the 40-degree Celsius mark, while 250 monitoring points broke their historical records.
