European Diesel Prices Hit New Record Amid Energy Shocks

Diesel prices at fuel stations across the European Union have reached a new record high, now at 2.23 euros per liter, an increase from 2.16 euros recorded the previous week. This surge, revealed by national data published by the European Commission on Thursday, underscores the deepening energy crisis. The data, which has been published weekly since 2005, indicates that 19 out of the 27 EU member states experienced record prices, including major economies such as Germany, France, and Italy. These increases are primarily attributed to energy shocks stemming from the conflict in the Middle East and the Russia-Ukraine war. Denmark and Finland topped the list for new record high prices, with a liter of diesel, also known as gas oil, reaching 2.56 euros in both countries. Germany followed at 2.46 euros, then Belgium and France at approximately 2.40 euros, and Italy at around 2.30 euros. Conversely, other nations like Spain and Sweden also saw price increases but have not yet reached the peaks recorded in 2022, following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. These figures, compiled by the European Commission's Oil Bulletin, are sourced from national authorities. They generally reflect fuel station price levels at the beginning of the week or the end of the preceding week.
