Congo Records Over 8,000 Ebola Cases, 3,900 Deaths
Government data released today, Monday, revealed that the number of confirmed Ebola virus cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo has for the first time exceeded the 8,000 mark since the ongoing outbreak began in the Central African nation. The latest situation report from the Public Health Institute indicated that the total number of infections reached 8,067 cases, with the death toll standing at 3,901 individuals. This particular outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, is considered the largest and deadliest in Congo's history, surpassing the impact of the disease outbreak between 2018 and 2020. Globally, this outbreak ranks second only to the Ebola epidemic that struck West Africa between 2014 and 2016, which resulted in over 28,600 infections and more than 11,000 deaths across Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.
